SAN-MAXI
A whole-house water filter is installed centrally in a building’s water supply. This filters the water before it reaches the individual outlets throughout the property.
This means that the filter system treats not only drinking water in the kitchen, but also water in bathrooms, showers and other water connections.
SAN-MAXI combines three different natural filter stages, each with a different function.
Depending on the substance and filter stage, undissolved particles are retained mechanically, while various dissolved substances are bound or adsorbed. These include heavy metals, chemical contaminants, chlorine, hydrocarbons and certain long-chain PFAS.
The substances that can be reduced, and the extent of the reduction, depend among other things on their chemical properties, their concentration in the incoming water and the operating conditions.
Yes. SAN-MAXI has a mechanical filtration rating of 1 µm.
Undissolved microplastic particles and other particles larger than the relevant filter threshold can therefore be retained mechanically.
With the optional SAN-TITAN , mechanical fine filtration can be extended to 0.2 µm or 200 nanometres .
SAN-MAXI is the multi-stage whole-house water filtration system. It uses three natural filter materials and a mechanical filtration rating of up to 1 µm.
SAN-TITAN is an additional mechanical fine-filtration stage made from titanium, with a filtration rating of 0.2 µm or 200 nanometres.
SAN-TITAN can be installed downstream of SAN-MAXI. Depending on the application, both systems can also be used separately.
There is no plastic, sealant or adhesive in the water-carrying interior of SAN-MAXI.
The filter housing and filter cartridge are made from 2 mm-thick 316 stainless steel and are hand-welded.
The filter media used are also of natural origin.
No. The SAN-MAXI filter cartridge can be backwashed and is designed for long-term use.
Regular backwashing removes retained deposits and can extend the cartridge maintenance interval by up to 50 % .
Depending on water quality, consumption and operating conditions, one cartridge is designed to filter around 150,000 to 220,000 litres of water .
After use, it is returned to SANSEI and fed into the designated recycling cycle. A deposit is charged for the cartridge for this purpose.
SAN-MAXI does not require an additional high-pressure pump for the filtration process itself.
The system operates passively using the existing mains water pressure. This allows the water to pass through the different filter stages without an additional high-pressure pump.
This is precisely what we are investigating through repeated independent laboratory analyses under real operating conditions.
For one SAN-MAXI installation, the following aerobic mesophilic colony counts were measured downstream of the filter using the same filter cartridge for more than a year: 7, 6, 8, 1, 2 and most recently <1 CFU/ml.
The first documented sample was taken around 40 days after installation. A sample scheduled immediately after installation was accidentally not sent to the laboratory. This means that this series of measurements cannot be used to determine a percentage reduction in colony counts compared with the incoming water .
What the series of measurements does document is this: Throughout the observation period of more than a year, no increase in aerobic mesophilic colony counts downstream of SAN-MAXI was observed.
The filter cartridge was not backwashed during this series of measurements. This does not reflect our recommendation: SANSEI expressly recommends regular backwashingto flush out retained deposits and extend the maintenance interval.
SAN-MAXI is not a conventional salt-based water softener. The water is therefore not completely softened.
The natural volcanic mineral used has a microporous structure and can bind calcium and magnesium ions through ion exchange. This can reduce some of the water hardness.
At the same time, the water is swirled within the system. The resulting hydrodynamic conditions can influence the crystallisation of calcium carbonate and thereby alter the behaviour of any remaining limescale deposits.
In everyday use, this means: Remaining limescale deposits may be easier to remove. This can reduce the effort required to clean taps, shower surfaces and aerators, as well as the use of acids and descaling products.
Some of the natural minerals remain in the water.
The total cost depends on the desired configuration and the existing plumbing installation.

SANSEI innovations
We wanted to make water treatment better. So we started thinking about it differently.
- Swiss Design. Swiss Engineering.
- 316 stainless steel. Natural filter media. Long-lasting technology.
For water you can enjoy.
In 2026, SANSEI innovations received several awards for its work – in Switzerland and internationally.
- Global Award
- Prestige Award
- Global 100 Award
- Stilpunkte – Switzerland
We are delighted that our work and philosophy are recognised and celebrated beyond our own company.
But for us, the most important accolade is something else:
When someone is still happily drinking water from their own tap years later.
More than 200 SAN-MAXI units are now in use across Switzerland.
In detached homes, apartment buildings and larger properties. Every system operates under different conditions – and that is precisely what makes the experience so valuable to us.
Because we do not just want to develop and install our filters. We want to know how they perform after months and years of real-world use.
That is why we carry out long-term monitoring under real operating conditions . And one point is particularly important to us: We do not take the water samples or send them to the laboratory. Our customers do this independently. The analyses are carried out by independent laboratories. This creates deliberate separation between us as the manufacturer and the measurement results we later receive.
Not just on day one, but especially after months of use.
We are not only interested in readings from a new filter. The results after months of daily use are particularly valuable to us. Because we want to understand not only how a SAN-MAXI performs initially, but also how the measured values develop over its recommended service life.
To date, we have found very few comparable, publicly documented long-term measurements of domestic water filters under real operating conditions. That is why we conduct these measurement programmes ourselves – transparently, repeatedly and using systems installed in our customers’ properties.
Every installation and every new measurement helps us learn more. Over time, individual readings become something far more valuable:
certainty.
A detached house needs a different volume of water from an apartment block. And a hotel has an entirely different set of requirements.
That is why SAN-MAXI is not a domestic water filter limited to one size. The technology can be adapted to the required water demand and flow rate – from a detached house and apartment block to hotels, schools, care facilities and commercial buildings.
Depending on the application, the systems can be sized and combined accordingly. The underlying principle of water treatment remains the same.
One technology. Different scales.
No additional high-pressure pump is needed to force the water through the filtration system using extra energy.
SAN-MAXI operates as a passive household water filtration system using the existing mains pressure. No additional high-pressure pump is required for the filtration process itself.
The water flows in.
As it passes through the various natural filter stages, it does exactly what we developed SAN-MAXI to do:
Filter. Bind. Adsorb.
As simply as possible.
We don’t want to sell you new filter cartridges on a regular basis. We’re proud that you can use our filter cartridges for a long time.
For you. For us. For our environment.
All our filter systems can be backwashed: SAN-MAXI, SAN-TITAN and SAN-MINI.
Regular backwashing removes trapped particles and deposits from the filter. With SAN-MAXI, this can extend the filter cartridge maintenance interval by up to 50% With SAN-TITAN, backwashing reduces the cleaning required and extends the intervals between necessary ultrasonic cleaning cycles.
What does this mean for you? Less maintenance and lower running costs. At the same time, fewer materials are needed, and fewer components have to be replaced or disposed of.
And when the time eventually comes to replace a SAN-MAXI cartridge?
It isn’t simply disposed of. The used filter cartridge is returned to us and fed back into our recycling cycle.
For this, we charge a deposit. This ensures that the used cartridge is returned to us so that it can be professionally reconditioned and recycled.
Depending on water quality, consumption and operating conditions, a SAN-MAXI filter cartridge is designed to handle around 150,000 to 220,000 litres of water .
We believe sustainability should be more than a green sticker.
It should be evident in the product – and in the manufacturer’s philosophy.
SAN-TITAN: Optional fine filtration down to 0.2 microns.
We are happy to go one step further.
- Passive filter systems present a particular challenge: the finer the filter pores, the more difficult it becomes to maintain sufficient water flow. The crucial factor is therefore the right balance between filtration fineness, filter surface area and water flow – not just on the first day, but also after months of real-world use.
It took many tests, different approaches and a few costly missteps before we developed a solution with SAN-TITAN that met our exacting standards.
This led to the optional SAN-TITAN – for people who want to take fine filtration one step further.
After the SAN-MAXI, the water passes through an additional filter made from titanium Its mechanical filtration rating is 0.2 µm – equivalent to 200 nanometres. This provides additional retention of correspondingly small undissolved particles.
But here too, another question was crucial for us: sustainability.
Why should a high-quality titanium filter simply end up as waste one day?
SAN-TITAN: Backwash. Clean. Reuse.
SAN-TITAN is also backwashable. Regular backwashing flushes retained particles out of the titanium filter. This reduces the cleaning effort and can extend the intervals between necessary deep cleans.
Only when more intensive cleaning is required is the titanium filter removed, cleaned with ultrasound and refitted. It therefore does not need to be replaced with a new filter at every maintenance interval.
Its intended service life depends on the quality of the incoming water and the specific operating conditions, and is around ten years.
*Ultrasonic cleaning can be carried out by our technicians. Alternatively, you can do it yourself using a suitable ultrasonic cleaning device with minimum internal dimensions of 300 × 120 × 120 mm.
Clean it instead of throwing it away.
A very simple idea, really.
Three natural filter stages for your drinking water.
There are not many natural filter materials suitable for drinking water – we simply use them differently.
Do you know the main difference between filter coffee and an Italian espresso?
With espresso, the ground coffee is pressed into the portafilter.
We have adopted this principle. A SAN-MAXI filter cartridge weighs 6 kg, because we heavily compress the filter materials of natural origin. This makes the water flow intensively through the filter materials instead of simply flowing around the granules.
- Our filter cartridges are made without glue, plastic fibres, seals or chemically active substances.
- We use no experimental additives and no substances whose suitability for the intended use in drinking water treatment has not been documented.
Our three-stage system
The first stage consists of clear quartz glass granulate, manufactured specifically for filtration – not from waste glass or recycled bottles. It retains undissolved particles such as sand, earth, rust and other suspended solids down to the stated filter rating.
This is followed by a natural volcanic mineral. Its microporous structure enables it to bind various unwanted dissolved substances in the water, including certain heavy metals and other chemical contaminants. Through ion exchange, the volcanic mineral can also bind calcium and magnesium ions, thereby reducing some of the water hardness.
In the third stage, the water encounters a barrier made from compressed activated carbon from coconut fibres. Its large internal surface area adsorbs chlorine, hydrocarbons and certain long-chain PFAS, among other substances, and can reduce further groups of organic compounds.
Three different materials of natural origin.
Three different functions.
And one shared goal:
Water we would be happy to drink ourselves.
Drinking water comes into contact with the materials in a filtration system every day. So one thing was clear to us from the outset: We wanted to use as little plastic as possible inside the SAN-MAXI – and none at all in the actual filter area.
The SAN-MAXI housing and the complete filter cartridge are made from 2 mm thick, acid-resistant 316 stainless steel. Both components are hand-welded and designed for a long service life.
No plastic. No seals. No adhesive in the filter area.
Inside the SAN-MAXI, no plastics, seals or adhesives come into contact with the water being filtered.
This not only reduces the use of plastic, but also follows a simple principle: We want to reduce unwanted substances in the water – not create new routes for contamination through unnecessary materials.
316 stainless steel – made for long-term contact with water
316 stainless steel is used wherever corrosion resistance, hygiene and high mechanical strength are required. That is why the material is used for both the filter housing and the reusable filter cartridge in the SAN-MAXI.
The internal surfaces are finished to a surface roughness of around 0.7 µm . The very smooth surface makes deposits less likely and makes cleaning easier.
Built to last.
While many filtration systems require complete plastic housings or filter inserts to be replaced regularly, the stainless steel cartridge in the SAN-MAXI is designed for a very long service life .
When the cartridge is replaced, it is not thrown away: it returns to our circular system, where it is refurbished and reused. Only the used filter materials are replaced.
This is how we combine durable materials with a filtration system that is not designed as a disposable product.
Less plastic. Less waste. Better hygiene.
Long-term testing: what matters is what happens after months of use.
A new water filter can deliver good laboratory results. We are interested in a more challenging question:
What does it look like after months? And after a year?
That is why we do not examine SAN-MAXI only at the start of its service life. We monitor selected systems over an extended period and have the water quality tested repeatedly by independent laboratories.
We have deliberately created distance between ourselves and the measurements: SANSEI does not take the water samples or send them to the laboratory – our customers do this independently. We then receive the laboratory results.
This gives us measurements from real-life conditions, rather than ideal conditions created specifically for a test.
Over a year. The same cartridge. Six laboratory analyses.
This system’s SAN-MAXI was installed on 10 July 2025 The sample scheduled immediately after installation was accidentally not sent to the laboratory by the plumber.
The first documented analysis was therefore carried out on 19 August 2025 – around 40 days after commissioning. Testing then continued:
| Date | Time since installation | Aerobic mesophilic microorganisms | Test report |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19 August 2025 | approx. 40 days | 7 CFU/ml | |
| 30 October 2025 | approx. 112 days | 6 CFU/ml | |
| 6 January 2026 | approx. 180 days | 8 CFU/ml | |
| 17 March 2026 | approx. 250 days | 1 CFU/ml | |
| 21 May 2026 | approx. 315 days | 2 CFU/ml | |
| 24 July 2026 | approx. 379 days | < 1 CFU/ml |
7 → 6 → 8 → 1 → 2 → < 1 CFU/ml
More than one year after installation, and beyond the recommended service life of the filter cartridge, this series of measurements shows no increase in the measured aerobic mesophilic microorganism count downstream of SAN-MAXI.
The lowest value in the entire series was recorded in the final analysis: < 1 CFU/ml after around 379 days.
There is another aspect that makes this long-term test particularly interesting to us:
This cartridge was not backwashed once.
That explicitly does not reflect our recommendation. We recommend regular backwashing to flush retained deposits out of the cartridge and extend its maintenance interval.
However, the fact that this system was not backwashed at any point during the documented period makes the observed development of the microorganism counts even more interesting to us.
We do not only measure when the filter is new.
Water filters are often presented with laboratory values for filter performance. What interests us much more is how they develop under real conditions over a period of months.
That is when we see what happens inside the filter over the long term.
So far, we have found very few publicly documented long-term measurements for domestic water filters under real operating conditions. That is why we are continuing these measurements: transparent, repeated and carried out on systems in real use at our customers’ homes.
Not because we distrust our filters.
But because we want to know whether they will be just as convincing tomorrow as they are today.
An important note about these measurements
This series documents the aerobic mesophilic microorganism count in the water downstream of this specific SAN-MAXI system at the respective sampling times.
As the baseline sample scheduled during installation was not sent to the laboratory, this series of measurements cannot be used to calculate a percentage reduction in the microorganism load compared with the source water .
The results also cannot be transferred directly to every installation, as water quality, usage, temperature, stagnation times and other operating conditions may vary.
What this series documents is the development of the measured microorganism count downstream of the same SAN-MAXI cartridge over more than a year of real-world operation.
We are carrying on.
Six analyses are not an endpoint for us. With further systems and further measurements, we want to document step by step how SAN-MAXI performs throughout its entire service life under real conditions.
On our future laboratory page, we will bring together the measurement series, background information and the associated independent laboratory reports transparently.
Not just a laboratory value. A story spanning years.
¨We make water treatment better by thinking about it differently.
